Community Contribution

Sindhu Garments has consistently upheld a steadfast commitment to providing employment opportunities for women since its inception. In contrast to other factories that predominantly hire young girls, Sindhu Garments distinguishes itself by offering employment to women aged above 30, handicapped individuals, the deaf and mute, war widows, and those facing major challenges that could leave a woman without a source of income. For those from distant locations, secure lodging and cooking facilities are provided. Many women in and around Sindhu Garments workshops earn a substantial income.

The company actively promotes diversity and inclusion in the workplace. Sindhu Garments supports various NGOs by participating in seminars and workshops aimed at empowering women in rural areas. Training centers have been established in the North to teach new skills to war widows, who are then appointed as sub-workers based on contractual agreements. Recently, Sindhu Garments established a training center in Marawanpula, Jaffna, comprising 40 homes gifted by the NON-VIOLENT PEACE FORCE to the homeless. Similar initiatives are undertaken in the Kotmale District and Wellawatte, supporting housewives and retired females in earning income in their later years.

Subathra Ramamoorthy, the founder of Sindhu Garments, represented Sri Lanka at the SAWES Forum in Bangladesh and is a member of the Women’s Chamber of Industry & Commerce, having served as an ExDirector on the WCIC Board. Sindhu Garments donates pillows to Pugalidam, a charity home in Batticaloa that cares for orphans, semi-orphans, and children from broken homes, using fabric remnants that would otherwise be disposed of, posing hazards to nature.

Sindhu Garments is not merely a profit-driven venture but also demonstrates a strong commitment to community and the economic empowerment of women in Sri Lanka. This is achieved through frequent seminars, workshops, and mentoring programs. The company believes that businesses can be a formidable force for positive change by integrating women’s empowerment into corporate strategy, contributing to economic, environmental, and social progress for sustainable development. Collaborating closely with Ministry of Health Officials, Midwives, and Municipality Council, Sindhu Garments educates expecting mothers on improving footwear choices for health and hygiene. Sales and marketing opportunities are provided to women in villages to directly market URBAN KIDDIES shoes to expectant mothers, offering them a steady source of income.
